Healthcare Policies Cancelled
January 2, 2007
KCET TV
Reporter Sam Louie with KCET interviewed one of The Quisenberry Law Firm's attorneys, Heather McKeon, and a client, Tarsha Harris, to learn more about what happens when an insurance company like Blue Cross cancels a health insurance policy after the insured is sick and makes a claim. The reporter's notes are below, along with a link to view the documentary.
Reporter's Notes by Sam Louie:
The idea for this story came to me after reading several stories (the Los Angeles Business Journal and the L.A. Times) addressing this issue. The thought of having your insurance cancelled appeared frightening, and I wanted to know a bit more on whether this was, indeed, happening and to what extent.
The story illustrates how powerful the healthcare industry has become, and it appears that the only way for consumers to combat unfair cancellations is through litigation. The state is getting involved, though, and is looking to see if this is a more systemic problem within the industry. I believe that with corporations downsizing the increase of freelancers, this trend is likely to continue, unless the state heavily penalizes the industry against this type of practice.
